St. Louis Cardinals Team Report

INSIDE PITCH The Cardinals' starting pitching, one of the club's strengths through April, has hit a snag in May, the rotation posting only a 5-5 record with a 5.88 earned run average. Interestingly, only Todd Wellemeyer, who will pitch Tuesday at Pittsburgh, has been immune to the starters' troubles lately. And he had been the weakest link in the season's first month. Wellemeyer has given up only four runs over his last 14 innings over his last two starts, both victories. On the other hand, Kyle Lohse, Joel Pineiro and Adam Wainwright have labored. Lohse, 3-0 in April, is 0-2 in May, having allowed 13 runs in his last 10 1/3 innings in two starts, both losses. Pineiro, who had been 4-0, has been better than that but has lost his last two starts while permitting five earned runs in 13 innings. And Wainwright, who had been 3-0, has given up 11 runs over his last 12 innings in two starts, one of them a loss. But Wainwright, after giving up four runs in six innings at Cincinnati on Sunday, has discovered a flaw while watching videos of his pitching last year and this year. Wainwright, with injured Chris Carpenter's help, detected that his arm was several inches more vertical than his arm slot was last year when he was 11-3. "I finally, absolutely know what I can do to pitch better," said Wainwright, who next is slated to pitch this weekend against Milwaukee.NOTES, QUOTESRHP Ryan Franklin suffered his first blown save of the season in his 10th save opportunity Sunday when he surrendered solo homers to SS Jerry Hairston Jr., and pinch-hitter Micah Owings in the ninth inning. Franklin hadn't been scored on in his first 13 outings. "I made two mistakes. In this ball park, you can't make too many mistakes," said Franklin.1B Albert Pujols, NL Player of the Month for April, had been nothing-for-11 before he homered in the fifth inning Sunday. Pujols had gone hitless in three straight games after a 4-for-4 game.BY THE NUMBERS: 4 Number of Cardinals rookies who have hit their first major league homers OF Colby Rasmus and INFs Joe Thurston, Brian Barden and Tyler Greene.QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm lucky to be walking today." CF Rick Ankiel, after losing his balance and taking on the left-center-field wall at Busch Stadium.ROSTER REPORTRHP Chris Carpenter, on the 15-day disabled list since his second start of the season with a torn left oblique muscle, will throw his first bullpen session in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. "I'm really, really excited about getting back on the mound," said Carpenter, who hadn't given up an earned run in 10 innings. Barring complications, Carpenter is likely to be activated during the next home stand, perhaps next week to face the Cubs, against whom he is 7-3. LF Chris Duncan, who had 27 runs batted in last season before missing the last two months with a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery, already has 23 RBI. He is 12-for-30 (.400) with runners in scoring position and 8-for-17 with runners in scoring position and two out. OF Shane Robinson, whose first major league hit was a pinch double in the eighth inning Sunday in Cincinnati, will get his first start Tuesday night against Pittsburgh LHP Zach Duke. The right-handed Robinson, though only 5-foot-8, packs some power. 2B Skip Schumaker has a six-game hitting streak in which he has batted .455 (10-for-22), raising his average to .307 after it had sunk to .269. INF Brendan Ryan, on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, will report to Class AAA Memphis on Tuesday for what is scheduled as a brief rehabilitation assignment. Ryan is eligible to come off the DL this weekend. MEDICAL WATCH: CF Rick Ankiel (sore right shoulder, head) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. INF Brendan Ryan (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He will start a rehab assignment with Class AAA Memphis during the week of May 11-17. RHP Chris Carpenter (torn left oblique muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 15. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session May 12. Carpenter is likely out six to eight weeks. 3B Troy Glaus (right shoulder surgery in January 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He didn't heal as quickly as was hoped, and he may not play before July. LHP Jaime Garcia (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He likely will miss all or nearly all of the 2009 season. HER MAJESTY'S WILL: A Novel In Serial Format, Starting Next Month!

While I toil on through the Roman novel (and await word on the secret project), I'm also dabbling with a new novel. I've had the first few chapters written for a year, but it's not the book my agent wants, so he's given me his blessing to serialize it. Normally, this is not something I would consider. But through a confluence of events, this is a golden opportunity. You see, one of my literary hats is as part of the three-man team of Shanghai Low Theatricals. With old friends and collaborators Steve Pickering and Kevin Theis, I help to adapt classic pieces of literature to the stage. The company is growing, and in an effort to help raise funds, we tossed around the idea of serializing something. I had an incomplete novel in a drawer, which I forwarded to them. My e-mail was brief: Hey, guys. I've got this half-written story of Will Shakespeare and Kit Marlowe as spies during Shakespeare's "lost years." Steve was the first to respond, and he was really tickled by the idea. Kevin rolled his eyes at me via cyberspace, then gave his blessing as well. Thus, starting in May 2009, Shanghai Low Theatricals will be publishing a new novel by my, entitled HER MAJESTY'S WILL: THE BABBINGTON PLOT. My first foray into Tudor England, it's great for me because it forces me to finish the novel, one chapter at a time. Serial deadlines, if you will. (Heh. If you Will.) So keep an eye on the Shanghai Low site for more details! And see you all soon!

Activist investors: Flight of the locusts

Will the retreat of activist investors give industrial bosses more leeway to manage?A YEAR ago Stephan Howaldt, the chief executive of Hermes Focus Asset Management Europe, a British activist fund, was in full cry against the Pesenti family, an Italian industrial dynasty. The fund had taken a stake in Italmobiliare, a financial holding company controlled by the family, which in turn controls Italcementi, the worlds fifth-largest cement-maker. Hermes demanded a performance review for Carlo Pesenti, Italcementis chief executive, and said the cement firm should sell its stakes in unrelated businesses such as newspapers and banking. Things got personal: the family executives, Mr Howaldt said, became unusually closed-up.Italcementis management was therefore delighted when Hermes said in January that it was reorganising its fund and replacing Mr Howaldt. The funds activist style had been disproportionately hit by the financial crisis, it explained. Hermes still owns shares in Italmobiliare, but its management is not expecting much further pressure for change. ...

Carl Foreman's "The Victors"

The sole directorial effort of Carl Foreman, the prolific writer and producer, "The Victors" remains one of the most powerful anti-war films to come out of Hollywood. It was one of Columbia's major productions of 1963 - a three-hour (plus intermission) roadshow production for which the studio harbored Oscar fantasies. The studio's other big Oscar bid that year was Otto Preminger's equally sprawling "The Cardinal." Oddly enough, while "The Cardinal" has surfaced on VHS, laser and DVD, "The Victors" continues to sit on some shelf at Sony, neglected.Shot in widescreen and black-&-white by Christopher Challis and boasting a huge international cast, "The Victors" works essentially as a series of short stories about the various members of an infantry squad as it treks from Sicily to Germany during the final weeks of World War II, crosscutting their interpersonal relationships with those they share with the enemy and with assorted women. Foreman, who wrote his own script, keeps his film big and hulking while also managing to concentrate on the human interest in his vignettes.Peter Fonda, for example, pops up as a soldier obsessed with saving a puppy from the ravages of war; George Hamilton is a G.I. disillusioned when the woman he falls for - played by Romy Schneider - becomes a prostitute; Eli Wallach plays a harsh sergeant who has his face blown off in combat and, in the finale, Albert Finney appears as a drunken Russian soldier whose face-to-face encounter with the disgusted Hamilton neatly sums up the insanity of war.The best moment in the film, for my money, is the stark sequence when a young American deserter is executed in the snow while Frank Sinatra's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" plays in the background. There's more, but I haven't been able to see the film in years and it is quickly disappearing from my mind. Too bad.As a writer, Foreman worked largely with producer-director Stanley Kramer, penning both including "Home of the Brave" (1949) and "The Men" (1950). His last film in tandem with Kramer would be the Fred Zinnemann-directed "High Noon" (1952), whose release coincided with Foreman's "hostile" testimony before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. His refusal to cooperate ultimately led to his blacklisting.Foreman would continue to write movies, using assorted pseudonyms (including Derek Frye) and often without taking credit at all. It was pretty much known that he wrote the screenplay for David Lean's 1957 Oscar-winning "The Bridge on the River Kwai," although credit would go to Pierre Boule, the French author who wrote the novel upon which "Kawi" was based. Boule subsequently took home the Oscar for Best Screenplay, although the Academy would honor Foreman for his contribution in 1985, following his death from brain cancer the year before. As a producer, Forman was responsible for such fine films as "Born Free," "Young Winston" and, best of all, John Dexter's 1970 "The Virgin Soldiers," another vivid (and lost) anti-war film starring Hywell Bennett (and whatever happened to him?), Lynn Redgrave and Nigel Davenport. But, for me,"The Victors" remains his towering achievement.

Short Blogging Hiatus

Dont panic. Life is good. Bullety, because blogging scares me right now. This morning we finally secured a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. Woot! But we have to fly it from interstate which left us a bit apprehensive. We made round after round of phone calls, spoke to references, and were reassured. Apparently flying puppies happens quite often - whod have thought? Pup due to arrive at the end of the month. Kids are suitably thrilled. Fingers crossed nothing goes wrong. After MUCH thought, Ive decided to return to Blogger. Originally the idea was to simply shift over when my hosting plan ends at the end of February. And then in my research I discovered um, no, the longer I leave it, the more comments Ill lose in the transfer. Losing all the comments over the past year is maddening but it would be worse to lose the posts themselves, so Im grinning and bearing it. Apparently theres a program out there that will do a reverse transfer from Wordpress to Blogger but I am too technophobic to work it out, so Ive resorted to manual transfer. Yes folks. I am copy/pasting EVERY POST since March of last year. It works, but its SLOW going. I am clone-posting here and at the new site. At some point in the next week I will officially anounce the move. Until then, carry on as normal. But the sooner I restart over at the new/old digs, the better, as the comments thereafter will stay put. More updates soon

Talking Turkey

Americas public call for Turkish entry into the European Union may backfireBY CHOOSING to end his grand tour of Europe in Ankara and Istanbul this week, Barack Obama fulfilled his pledge to visit a Muslim country during his first 100 days in office. He took the opportunity of his address to the Turkish parliament to reaffirm that America was not at war with Islam (see article). But his visit was also testimony to Turkeys strategic importance for the West as a whole. That reflects partly geography, partly geopolitics. As Mr Obama pointed out, Turkey is a natural bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Its potential as an energy transit corridor to Europe was again made obvious during Januarys gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey has the chance to play a pivotal role in the troubled Caucasus region, especially if its current efforts to repair relations with Armenia succeed. Militarily, Turkey has NATOs biggest army after Americas, and hosts a large American airbase at Incirlik. Recently its prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has also engaged robustly in Middle Eastern diplomacy, mediating between Syria and Israel, talking to Iran and keeping a beady eye on the aspirations for self-rule of the Kurds of northern Iraq. ...

The grass is always greener

Saving the planet and creating jobs may be incompatibleTHINK of whats happening in countries like Spain, Germany and Japan where theyre making real investments in renewable energy, Barack Obama instructed Americans earlier this year. Theyre surging ahead of us, poised to take the lead in these new industries. This isnt because theyre smarter than us, or work harder than us, or are more innovative than we are. Its because their governments have harnessed their peoples hard work and ingenuity with bold investmentsinvestments that are paying off in good, high-wage jobs.Mr Obama is right that many governments, not least his own, are spending heavily in a bid to create green jobs. Countries as diverse as Canada, China, France and Indonesia have vowed to cultivate greenery in an effort to fertilise their wilting economies. Religious leaders, trade unionists and the secretary-general of the United Nations, among others, have hailed green stimulus as a cure for the world economys ills. After all, it holds out the hope of a triple benefit: a return to economic growth, deliverance from global warming and an escape from dependence on imported fuels, all wrapped up in an appealingly high-tech package.

Florida's public defenders

How cuts may be illegal THE Miami-Dade County Public Defenders Office has had enough. Overworked and underfunded in its efforts to provide lawyers for the poor, it tried last June to decline all new non-capital cases. In September a judge ruled that it could turn away so-called third-degree felony cases, such as people pulled in for possession of soft drugs. On March 30th three appellate judges heard arguments as to whether the September ruling was valid. Public defenders in Floridas 20 judicial circuits have a crushing workload: in some cases, more than double the 200 cases a year that their association recommends. And ever since the state legislature cut their funds in the latest budget squeeze, they have been struggling with less money and lower pay. But to withdraw from cases, or to refuse to take them, may be illegal under both Article I, section 9 of the Florida constitution (due process) and the federal constitution, which guarantees both due process under the 14th amendment and the right to counsel.

social software recommendations

Social Software, Web We've looked at some ways to find software alternatives in the past - like Openwith.Org and Wakoopa. Social site Alternative. To offers yet another way to see what apps other users recommend.Categories for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Web-based applications are listed. On each platform page, there are tabbed listings for recent additions, most viewed, and most liked software (I'll skip "OMG FAIL", since you're likely not looking for a "worse alternative" anyway). You'll find all the usual suspects listed, like Photoshop, Nero, Word, as well as user-recommended replacements.Found a specific user whose suggestions you find particularly useful? Click onto their profile page to view all their likes on one page. Alternative. To also taps into Twitter's massive userbase to give you quick access to additional off-site comments about a particular app.To cast votes or suggest software, you'll need to log in. Fortunately, Alternative. To supports both Facebook and OpenID sign-ins so you likely won't have to sign up for yet another account. The community is still fairly new, so some entries don't have a lot of votes or recommendations yet, but that will change, obviously, as more users participate. Chinese, ROC military officials to meet in Hawaii

Reuters reports that Chinese and ROC military officials are meeting in Hawaii later this year:Senior Chinese and Taiwanese military officers will meet for the first time since the end of a civil war in 1949 at a forum in Hawaii this summer, state media said on Tuesday, in a further sign of improving ties between the political rivals.Officials from both sides will attend August's Transnational Security Cooperation forum organized by the U.S. Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, an institute under the U.S. Department of Defense, the official China Daily said. The newspaper said senior military officials in Beijing had confirmed that military personnel from the two sides would meet at the forum."Another military source in Beijing also suggested that some cross-Straits military exchanges may take place before August, but declined to reveal more details as yet," the report added.A Taiwan defense spokesman said on Monday that military officials may meet in August.Anschluss will be in the air this summer. Some have speculated that KMT heavyweights are aiming for formal annexation to take place in 2011, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ROC. Things are certainly proceeding fast enough.... and we're certain to see another round of "warming relations between Taiwan and China" in the international media, when what are warming are CCP-KMT relations....UPDATE: Here's another way I put it in the comments below:In relationships where there are symmetrical threats -- USSR-US, Israel-Egypt, India-China, arguably mil-mil contacts help reduce tensions. In the China-Taiwan relationship the threat is all one-sided -- anyone genuinely interested in reducing tensions would focus on the problem of Chinese aggression. Taiwan is not a military threat to China in any way.Arguing that mil-mil contacts between Taiwan and China -- carried out by picked pro-China mainlander officers on our side, without a doubt -- will reduce tension is like arguing that Wehrmacht-Czech contacts in 1938 would reduce tension. At best, mil-mil contacts will simply enable China to obtain information, dull responses, and sow dissension; at worst, they provide a medium for active collusion between the pro-China portion of the mainlander officer corps and the Chinese military. In this case "trust building" simply facilitates Chinese dominance over Taiwan. Remember, Lawrence Eyton pointed out several years ago that over 3,000 retired military officers from Taiwan are currently living in China. What does that tell you about the ROC military?Mil-mil contacts can genuinely reduce tension only when (1) officials on both sides are acting in good faith on behalf of their respective countries, and (2) the threat is symmetrical between them. I submit that we have good reasons to suspect (1) and that (2) does not apply at all.

Consuming

Here is what is consuming me these days, in no order of preference or importance:1. The Ribbed V-Neck Sweater from Fitted Knits by Stefanie Japel in Black Cascade Pastaza. Yummy, yummy yarn, I will use it again. I knit the body in my Knit Picks Options circulars; have I said lately how much I love them? They are so much better (for me) than Addis. Pointier, I like a pointy needle, I do. The sleeves? I was going to try to Magic Loop them, but in the end, I decided to follow the pattern and knit them flat with a seam. I am such a by-the-book sort of girl. I am using some Serendipity Needles (birch) that I bought on my Anniversary weekend at Adirondack Yarns in Lake Placid. They have funky polymer finials on the ends. Pretty.2. I will be starting this one (#5!) today. I am slowly catching up, but I find myself slowing down, because I don't want the story to end. This one, I am especially looking forward to, because I haven't seen the movie yet, and so it will all be new to me. The others I had seen the films, so there were large parts that seemed familiar. 3. Shark Week--need I say more? Good knitting television.4. The smallest of the small puppies--Delilah asleep on Cooper's bed. She is a good puppy, but still, a puppy and is a lot of work! 5. My hair. I want a hair cut. I need a style. I am tired of the easy way out, the all one length no effort look. I want something polished, professional, something that says I take the time to care about myself. Dare I say it? I want to be high maintenance. I like the one in the middle of the bottom row, but of course, my color, not blonde. (I can't do that high maintenance!) 6. And last but not least, I am planning a Girls' Movie Night here at the new house for my closest friends. Eight giggly girls and the big screen TV, what could be more fun? Oh, I know! If it had a theme to it...I can't say anymore until afterward, because Amy needs to be surprised.
